Cloud Forest, close to Mindo
An owner-run lodge in the cloudforest, offering excellent hiking, birdwatching, comfy accommodation and home-cooked food.
El Monte is a comfortable base from which to explore the cloudforest. It’s in a 44 hectare private reserve bordering Mindo Reserve. With guided walks from a hour to a full day, bird watching, opportunities for swimming, tubing along Rio Mindo and visiting an orchid garden, there’s plenty to keep you occupied and entertained. You can also go horse riding, mountain biking and visit the cock of the rock lek. Though this area is known primarily for its abundant birdlife, you can also see a number of reptiles, amphibians, insects and mammals such as sloth and capuchin monkey.
The lodge consists of the main building with the dining room, bar, games area, open decks, ideal for lazy bird watching, and 2 firepits. You can watch meals being prepared in the open kitchen. Both local and international dishes are available, and if you have a favourite the chef will gladly pass on the recipe.
Accommodation is in wooden, thatched roof cabanas arranged along the riverbank. Each has a bedroom, indoor sitting area and bathroom with bathtub, basin, flush toilet and 24-hour hot and cold water.
El Monte’s owners, Tom and Mariela, are excellent hosts and enjoy sharing their paradise with guests.
