Fernandina IslandFernandina is most famous for its volcanic activity and eruptions may occur to this day.
The volcanic landscape with its swirling patterns is largely devoid of plant life lending it an other-worldly feel. It’s the youngest and one of the most pristine of the islands and is located in the far west, at the hot spot where all the islands were created. Visits are limited to reduce the potential for damage to the environment and resident species and there is just one landing site.
Floreana landing site
You’ll arrive at Punta Espinosa (dry landing). From the landing site you can take a walk around the headland. You can expect to see marine iguanas and flightless cormorants, Sally Lightfoot crabs, penguins and sea lions. Another walk leads inland to the edge of a lava flow and you’ll see both pahoehoe and a’a lava. Cacti grow on the lava, adding a dash of colour.
